Five Islands in the Caribbean to be Sure and Visit

By Ray Fauteux of ironstruck

THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

The Cayman Islands have much more to offer than an off-shore bank on every corner. One of the main attractions is Stingray City. It is listed as one of the must-see water attractions in the world today. Put on that scuba or snorkeling gear and tourists can get in the water with the stingrays and swim with them.

Another great family attraction is the Cayman Island Turtle Farm. It's an opportunity to experience something unique and children especially enjoy visiting the turtle farm.

The Cayman Islands have an amazing stretch of sand called 7 mile-beach. It's not quite 7 miles long, but it's a stunning strip of snow white sand that seems to go on forever.

ST. THOMAS

There is a reason why there are almost always 3 or 4 cruise ships in the harbor at St. Thomas on any given day. It is the leading duty-free shopping island in the Caribbean. Diamonds, turquoise, emeralds, tanzanite and many other precious stones fill the shops that line the streets of the city center in Charlotte Amalie.

Just a short taxi ride over the hill sits one of the top ten beaches in the world. Meagan's Bay is simply spectacular. Just a few of the notables who have spent holiday time in the homes overlooking the bay are the Clinton family and Michael Jordan.

GRENADA

As soon as you set foot on this gorgeous island you can smell the fresh spice from the downtown outdoor spice market.

Fresh pepper, Cinnamon, curry powder, and dozens of other spices are there for visitors to barter for. You never really pay the asking price and usually a smile and some good-natured bargaining will get you a great deal plus a story to tell when you get back home.

Be sure to brush up on your high school french, because very few of the women in the spice stalls at the main market can speak a lick of English. They just smile a lot but that's a universal language if ever there was one.

ARUBA

Baby Beach, Palm Beach and many other stunning white-sand beaches are spotted all over this friendly island. English is the main language spoken and the locals also speak a local Arubian language that is a complete mystery to most visitors. Don't worry about it. You'll get by fine with just English if you visit Aruba.

There are many all-inclusive resorts on Aruba and they are situated on the best beaches on the island. They are much pricier than many of the other islands, but well worth the investment if you want a truly special and memorable vacation.

If you like casinos there is plenty of gambling action on Aruba. There are several Las Vegas style casinos where visitors can try their luck.

MARTINIQUE

Martinique is another island where French is the main language. It is so French that Air France flies directly to Martinique from Paris.

Club Med has a popular resort on the island and it has many visitors from Germany and France and not quite as many from the United States and Canada.

The people of Martinique seem to just go about their business and have grown used to all the tourists. They do seem a bit reserved and not quite as outwardly friendly as the inhabitants of other Caribbean islands. However, Martinique is beautiful and like most of the Caribbean Islands has post card perfect beaches.

I have visited all the islands mentioned several times over the years and they are all truly beautiful in their own way. English, Spanish, and French are the languages you will hear most.

Thank you for sharing this information, Ray. My wife and I have stopped at all of these islands, except Grenada, while cruising. We love the area very much.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes.
Frederick
