What Makes People Tick?

By Ray Fauteux

My son and his wife of 3 years just recently purchased a second house.

They have both worked hard to get where they are today. Even well before they ever met it seems they were both dedicated to building a solid foundation for whatever the future might hold.

Bonnie, my daughter-in-law is an RN and owned a home when my son met her. After their marriage they worked hard to purchase a second home as an investment property because of the better mortgage rates and the drop in real estate prices that was pretty much North America wide.

The idea was to rent out one home to help pay the mortgage of the second. The mistake my son made was offering a friend and his wife the opportunity to rent the entire home at a very fair price.

They refused to cut the grass or shovel the walk and were always late with the rent. Every time it snowed in the Winter he had to go over and shovel the walk because the neighbors complained to them. In the Summer he had to go over every two weeks and mow the lawn.

It became a huge problem for my son and his wife as their new baby was born and they were trying to deal with the tenants at the same time. My son was working two jobs.

The wife screamed at my daughter-in-law because she was being greedy when she finally had to give them notice to move. So Bonnie tried to be fair and gave them a full 90 days to find a new place.

When they left they took things that did not belong to them and had not paid the utilities and my son was left with a $1500 utility bill. There were holes in the wall and despite being told they had to be non-smokers when they moved in, the whole house reeked of smoke.

The carpets were also ruined and have to be replaced. The damage deposit hardly covers half the repairs let alone the huge utility bill.

So my question is....why do people think so badly of those who work hard and succeed?

These tenants were renting an entire house and really could not afford it, despite being given a great rate.

They took it out on my son and his wife and because they happened to own two homes considered them "greedy".

It's the same mentality as the year I bought a brand new car. It was a convertible and I had worked years to finally be able to buy a new car.

I picked it up from the dealership and drove 23 kilometers to a friends and went inside for about an hour.

When I came out someone had tried to burn a hole through the convertible top with a cigarette. The material had melted and left a black hole and they must have spent several minutes trying to get it to burn through.

"Twenty-three kilometers old".

What do these people think? Do think others who have nice things have them handed to them? Are they so pathetic and jealous of everyone who has something nice that all they can do is try and destroy it to make themselves feel better?

I truly don't understand the mentality, but most people have the same opportunity to work hard at "something" and save their money for something special they want.

Maybe if my son's tenants and whoever messed with my new car considered giving up cigarettes they would have more disposable income to buy their own nice things.
